Noticed that there were still spots of tar-like grease inside the housing, which the sand blasting media had stuck to. Can't have grit running around in here of course.
First, dumped diesel fuel down the length of the tube. Let it soak for an hour or so. Then used spray on-rinse off engine cleaner and let that soak. Used a brass bruss to scrub the inside, then a rinse off with the garden hose. That just felt wrong, but it works. Finally, sprayed everything I could inside with spray grease to try to keep rust at bay.
