Gear Lash


These photos illustrate how I setup the assembly to set the gear lash.  I had real problems with this step, the problem being is that I have never worked with another T rear end, so had no point of comparison to what right is.  I do have a dial indicator, but not a magnetic base.  So I went through all sort of convolutions on trying to determine what was the correct setup.  Without a shim between the roller housing, and without a shim under the ring gear, I could feel movement when holding the pinion in place.

I even went as far as taking solder, running it between the ring and pinion, and miking the compressed portion of the solder.  Using this method, I was approx 7-10 thou.

I added a 10 thousandths shim under the ring, a shim between the roller, and could feel no movement, yet the assembly turned smoothly.  I talked to my engineer brother, who felt that was too tight and would whine, so I pulled the shim back out from the ring, removed the shim from the roller housing, and back to discernable audible movement - though not much.
