Cleanliness....

There is a book about rebuilding Rochester carbs that came out in the 1960s.  I don't remember the name, but it is considered THE book on the subject.  I used it while rebuilding the carb on my 1970 Jeepster Commando.  While reading this book, I was really struck by an example they cited.  It described the procedures used by a prominent speed shop in California during the the time.

This shop issued each technician a pile of white towels.  The tech would disassemble the carb, take the components, give them a soak in carb cleaner.  THEN everything would get a bath in hot soapy water.  Then all parts laid out on the white towel for reassembly.  The white towel kept everything from rolling around, easily visible, and of course you could not put dirty parts on a white towel.

Hot soapy water - are you kidding me?

But I tried it.  Wow, I will never reassemble greasy parts again.  Like a whole new world.   Here is a photo of me washing the Hyatt bearing out of the Ruckstell.  Greasy black mess before.  Soaked in diesel overnight, then soaked in a water based eco friendly degreaser called Purple Power, then hot water wash along with Dawn dishwashing liquid.  Look at the results below.  Try it, you will be a believer.

Each part was briefly dipped in light oil after washing.
